Peles Castle | A royal fairytale in the Carpathians
Nestled in the mountain town of Sinaia, Peles Castle was the summer residence of Romania’s first king, Carol I. With its Neo-Renaissance turrets, stained-glass windows, and lavishly decorated halls, the castle feels like a page from a storybook. Inside, discover hand-carved woodwork, priceless artworks, and themed rooms inspired by European cultures, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Carpathian Mountains.
Things to know before you buy your Peles Castle ticket
All Peles Castle tickets are valid only for the selected date and time slot. You’ll need to choose your preferred entry time when booking, and admission is only permitted during that slot.
Lines can get long, especially on weekends, public holidays, and in the summer months (June to August). With skip-the-line tickets, you can bypass the ticket desk and head directly to security, though you may still face a short wait to enter during peak hours.
The castle has more than 160 rooms, each richly decorated in different European styles. Opting for a guided tour helps you make sense of the lavish interiors, themed halls, and royal treasures, while also ensuring you don’t miss key highlights such as the Hall of Mirrors, the Imperial Apartments, and the arms collection.
For a seamless experience, consider a day trip from Bucharest that includes Peles Castle along with nearby landmarks such as Bran Castle and Brașov. Transport, entry tickets, and a guide are often bundled together, saving you time and planning hassles.
Please note that photography inside the castle requires a special permit that can be purchased on-site. Without it, taking photos indoors is not allowed.
Peles Castle is partially wheelchair accessible. While the ground floor can be visited step-free, upper levels may be difficult to access due to the historic layout and limited elevator access.

What to expect at Peles Castle?
Beyond Peles Castle
1/4
A royal retreat in the Carpathians
Commissioned by King Carol I in the late 19th century, Peles Castle was Romania’s first royal summer residence. Blending Neo-Renaissance elegance with German influences, it sits against the dramatic backdrop of the Carpathian Mountains. From its turrets and stained-glass windows to oak-panelled halls, the castle radiates both grandeur and warmth.
Lavish interiors from around the world
Step inside more than 160 rooms, each designed in a different European style, from the Venetian Room with Murano glass chandeliers to the Turkish Salon draped in silk and carpets. The castle’s exquisite wood carvings, frescoes, and crystal mirrors showcase craftsmanship at its finest. Don’t miss the Hall of Mirrors and the king’s private library with its secret passageway.
Treasures of a modern monarch
Peles was the first European castle fully powered by electricity, and its collection reflects King Carol I’s vision of progress and culture. Discover medieval arms and armor in the Weapons Room, admire fine porcelain and tapestries, and see the royal art collection that spans centuries and styles. Every detail speaks to the king’s passion for innovation and refinement.
More than just a castle
Beyond the main palace, you can stroll the landscaped terraces, visit the nearby Pelisor Castle, built for King Ferdinand and Queen Marie, or simply soak up the alpine air in Sinaia. With its mountain setting, royal history, and storybook architecture, Peles Castle offers not just a tour, but an immersive journey into Romania’s past.
Therme București
Unwind at Europe’s largest wellness and relaxation center, featuring thermal pools, saunas, and lush botanical gardens. It’s the perfect retreat after a day of sightseeing.
The Hall of Honour
Holul de Onoare (The Hall of Honour) was completed under the direction of Karel Liman, in 1911 and encompasses three levels. Exotic woods and European walnut are used primarily to decorate the walls with superbly crafted woodwork. Retractable stained glass panels, bas-reliefs, and statues made of alabaster finish the decoration.
The Grand Armory
1,600 pieces of armour and armament are kept in Sala Mare de Arme, also known as ‘The Arsenal’. This exhibit features one of Europe's best collections of hunting and combat weapons from the 14th-19th centuries. The king increased several pieces utilised in his triumph over the Ottoman Turks during the War of Independence.
The Florentine Room
The Sala Florentine (The Florentine Room), incorporates numerous revived aspects of the Italian Renaissance, primarily from Florence. Most spectacular among these are the solid bronze doors made in Rome, the Luigi Magni ateliers, and the grand marble fireplace made by Paunazio with Michelangelo patterns.
The Imperial Suite
The Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, who visited the castle as a friend of the Romanian Royal Family, is thought to have been honoured with Apartamentul Imperial (The Imperial Suite). The rarest of such quality is a five-hundred-year-old Cordoban tooled leather wall cover that is immaculately preserved.
Ceramics exhibition
Over 5,000 pieces of porcelain, floor tiles, and faience from the finest 19th-century European ceramicists and centres are on display at the ceramics exhibition. The Peles Museum acquired subsequent artefacts from both private owners and antique shops during 1970. It was founded between 1914 and 1927 by Queen Marie.
Clock collection
Over 50 clocks from the private royal collection, representing a variety of styles and typologies, are on show at the horology exhibition in Peles. It contains pocket watches, pendulum table clocks, grandfather clocks, fireplace clocks, alarm clocks, and more. The majority of them belonged to King Carol I.
Pelișor Castle
(500m away)
Built as a residence for King Ferdinand and Queen Marie, this smaller castle charms with its Art Nouveau interiors, stained-glass details, and the famous ‘Golden Room.’
Getting there: A 5-minute walk from Peles Castle along the same estate grounds.
Sinaia Monastery
(1.3km away)
Founded in the 17th century, this Orthodox monastery gave Sinaia its name. Explore Byzantine frescoes, historic icons, and a peaceful courtyard framed by mountain views.
Getting there: A 15-minute downhill walk or short taxi ride from the castle.
Cantacuzino Castle
(12km away, Bușteni)
A Neo-Romanian style castle set against the Bucegi Mountains, known for its grand halls, stained glass, and ever-changing art exhibitions. The terrace café offers panoramic views.
Getting there: 20 minutes by car or taxi from Sinaia.
Bran Castle
(47km away)
Romania’s legendary ‘Dracula Castle’ blends medieval history with Gothic intrigue. Wander its narrow stairways, secret passages, and dramatic ramparts.
Getting there: About 1 hour by car from Peles Castle; included in most day trips from Bucharest.
Timings & best time to visit
Wednesday: 10am to 12:45pm, 12:45pm to 2:30pm, 2:30pm to 4pm
Thursday – Sunday: 9:15am to 11am, 11am to 12:45pm, 12:45pm to 2:30pm, 2:30pm to 4pm
The summer months (June to August) are the busiest, with long lines and large tour groups. Tickets often sell out days in advance, so it’s best to plan 2 to 3 weeks early if visiting in peak season.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring mild weather, fewer crowds, and colorful mountain scenery, making them the most pleasant times for exploring both the interiors and Sinaia’s surroundings.
Winter (December to February) is much quieter. While some areas of the gardens may be snow-covered, the festive lights in Sinaia and nearby Christmas markets create a magical backdrop for your visit.
By train: Take a train from Bucharest North Station to Sinaia (about 1 hr 40 min). From Sinaia station, it’s a 15–20 minute walk uphill or a short taxi ride to the castle entrance.
By bus/minibus: Regular buses and minibuses run from Bucharest to Sinaia (approx. 2 hrs). From the Sinaia bus stop, taxis are available to take you up to the castle.
By taxi or private transfer: Taxis and pre-booked transfers from Bucharest drop you directly at the entrance road to the castle grounds.
By car: Drive via DN1/E60 from Bucharest to Sinaia (around 2 hrs depending on traffic). Paid parking is available near the castle grounds, a short walk from the entrance.
Photography policy: Taking photos inside the castle requires purchasing a separate photography permit at the entrance. Without it, photography indoors is not permitted.
Accessibility: The ground floor of Peles Castle is wheelchair accessible, but access to the upper floors is limited due to the historic design and lack of full lift coverage. Step-free toilets are available on-site, but the gardens and pathways can be uneven.
Parking & access: Paid parking for cars and buses is available near the castle grounds, with a short uphill walk to the entrance. Taxis and private transfers can drop visitors closer to the gate.
Visitor amenities: The castle grounds feature cafés and restaurants serving Romanian specialities, as well as souvenir shops offering local crafts, books, and memorabilia. ATMs are available in central Sinaia, a short walk from the castle.

You can miss this experience. The entrance it's a bit complicated to find. If you go from the front it's at the left side of the building. Maybe there will be queue, ask if they have tickets and then you will skip the queue. Our tour was a bit delayed bit totally worth it to wait.

Lulia was an amazing guide very enthusiastic and helpful!
Mr. Nico's skills in driving us up and down the mountains were amazing!
We went Monday (29th Dec) left Bucharest 7:40am.
First stop was Peles Castle which is closed Mon and Tue, but we had 1 hour to roam around for pictures and coffee.
Next stop was Brasov for lunch where we stayed for 1h30m
Last stop was Bran Castle for around 2h. It was very busy to get in the Castle. We booked fast track tickets and it took us around 15min to get into the Castle.
We were back in Bucharest 9:40pm, there was traffic in and out of the mountains so better not to make any plans for the day.
It was an enjoyable experience with the tour company.
On a side review as nothing to do with the tour fompany, Bran Castle should work on their crowd management and what you get for the tickets price. Without fast track passes we would not have made back in time for the bus. The torture room is a small area of the Castle and I would prefer the audio guide instead at 44eur per adult.
